Movies and television shows suggest that litigation is a prompt and efficient way to resolve disputes.  Experience demonstrates that this is simply not true:

-Litigation is costly.  Attorneys typically charge by the hour for their

time, and it shouldn't come as a shock to discover that it doesn't take

long for legal fees to reach into the tens of thousands of dollars in a

     typical lawsuit.

-Litigation is slow.  According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics's

2005 national survey, the median length of time across the country is

22 months from complaint to trial.

-Litigation rarely achieves its purpose.  According to the U.S. Bureau of

Justice Statistics's 2005 national survey, only 3.5% of disputes were

resolved by trial. The bulk of the remainder were resolved by

     settlement.

As a mediator, my goal is to provide parties with an opportunity to control the outcome of their disputes without the expense, delay, and uncertainty of litigation. I started Council Oak Mediation Services to provide mediation services in a wide range of disputes.  I have decades of experience in a various types of civil litigation, including commercial and business disputes, civil rights, intellectual property, and insurance.  I am available to serve as a mediator for parties whose cases are pending in state or federal court, and for parties who want to attempt mediation as an alternative to litigation.

I look forward to visiting with you and exploring ways that I can help you find a way to resolve your dispute.
